PATTY VILLANUEVA ~ Artistic Director and Performer for Velocity Concert Dance and Happendance Education Exchange Team

Patty Villanueva is Artistic Director of Happendance Professional Company and its education program Happendance Education Exchange, Ballet Mistress of Children’s Ballet Theater of Michigan, and a local teacher and performer. Growing up in Grand Haven, MI, she studied through high school with Nancy Baum and then attended Hope College in Holland, MI, where she was honored with a Distinguished Artist Award, and and taught ballet and dance at Black River Public School and at the Holland Area Arts Council. She served as Ballet Mistress for the Holland Area Youth Ballet and danced with Aerial Dance Theater (now Hope College’s H2 dance company) also serving as the rehearsal assistant. Patty and her family moved to the Lansing area in 1998 and she joined the staff at Happendance. She also taught and performed with the Greater Lansing Ballet under the direction of Barbara Smith, including duties as mistress of the junior company. Currently Patty teaches many levels of ballet at Happendance School and in May 2009 received a Distinguished Service Award for her 10 years on staff. She also teaches at the Dance Conservatory of Charlotte, and serves as Ballet Mistress for the Children’s Ballet Theater of Michigan. After performing occasionally as a guest with Happendance, she joined the professional company in 2009 and Happendance Education Exchange in 2011. Patty served as the assistant director of Happendance from 2011-13 and in 2014 became Artistic Director of both companies.

SARAH DOBSON ~ Happendance Education Exchange Dancer

Sarah graduated from Michigan State University this Spring with a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology. She is thrilled that she can continue dancing and performing while pursuing her career as a Licensed Veterinary Technician. She received her professional training with Happendance, Children's Ballet Theater of Michigan, and Chicago's Ellen Werksman. This is her third season with HappenDance Professional Company.

LAUREN MUDRY ~ Velocity Concert Dancer

Lauren Mudry is a professional dancer, educator and graphic designer based out of Lansing, Michigan. She is currently a dance instructor for various studios all over Mid-Michigan, Red Cedar Gymnastic dance and cheer coach, Assistant Director for Happendance Pre-Professional Company, Happendance Professional Company dancer, and DANCE Lansing CDP Leadership board member. Lauren graduated from Lansing Community College with a degree in Graphic Design and Eastern Michigan University with her B.S. in Dance in 2013 and received the Dance Major of the Year Award. While at EMU she served as President of Dance Forum Student Organization, performed at and attended ACDFA, and was Assistant Producer for EMU Video Dance Project: For Diegothat was premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York. Lauren has had the privilege of working under choreographers such as Barbara Selinger, Philip Simmons, Kathy King, Wendi DuBois, Dr. Alice Bloch, and Sherry Jerome-Wilkinson. In her career, she has had the opportunity to take class with distinguished members from the Broadway cast of Wicked, Cloud Gate Dance Company, Mark Morris Dance Company, Lizzie Mackenzie, Richard Smith, Matthew Farmer, Janice Barringer, and Frank Hatchett. DEANNE RIVERA ~ Velocity Concert and Happendance Education Exchange Dancer

Deanne has been dancing since age 3. During 14 years at Bauer Dance Studio in Holt, she trained in ballet, lyrical, jazz, tap and hip hop. She also started her teaching career there, as an assistant instructor, in 1997. Deanne performed with the Holt High School Varsity Dance Team from 1998-2001, competing at state, regional and national competitions. In 2002, Deanne joined the staff at Synergy Dance Academy in Holt, where she added modern dance training while refining her other dance styles. At Synergy, Deanne served as an instructor, a dancer and choreographer with their Professional Performance Company, and co-directed the Senior Touring Company with Lisa Whiting Dobson. She began studying technique at Happendance School in 2009, and choreographed works for the student company, Happendance 2, in 2010 and 2011. In both of those years she also successfully auditioned as a dancer and choreographer for Community Dance Project. In March of 2011, she was accepted as a member of Happendance professional company, and began performing with the Happendance Education Exchange team for the 2011-12 season. Deanne earned a B.A. in English Literature from MSU in 2007, and is currently pursuing an M.A. in the same field from Central Michigan University. Deanne is a member of the Happendance Board of Directors, which she serves as Secretary, and is the Artists' Representative to the Board.

DANIELLE SELBY ~ Velocity Concert and Happendance Education Exchange Dancer

After graduating from the College at Brockport with her BFA in dance and choreography Danielle ran, cap and gown still on, to her first post college performance and hasn't slowed since. Her choreography has been performed at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research, Michigan Youth Arts Festival, RAD Fest, Built on Stilts, Detroit Dance Race, Inhale Performance series and others. She has had the privilege to perform her own choreography and others at historic venues like Judson Church in NYC, the House of Blues in New Orleans, The Egg and The Palace in upstate NY. She has danced for Nacre Dance Company, Libertina Dance Company and is currently a dancer and assistant artistic director for Happendance. This is Danielle’s 4th season with the professional and ToGo Company.

JOSH SMITH ~ Velocity Concert and Happendance Education Exchange Dancer

Josh was born and raised in Mason, Michigan. He was part of the first graduating class from A.M.D.A.(the American Musical and Dramatic Academy) L.A. to receive a B.F.A. in Dance Theater. As a young adult Josh taught himself gymnastics. At the age of 18 he began dancing at Lansing Community College and Happendance, studying ballet jazz and modern. In 2009 he moved to Los Angeles to further his training at A.M.D.A., expanding his repertoire of other styles of dance; including contemporary, Haitian and hip-hop. He also continued training in acting and musical theater. He danced with the Happendance Education Exchange company in 2009 and rejoined it in 2013. This is his second year with the Happendance Professional Company, and he couldn't be happier.

AMANDA TOLLSTAM ~ Velocity Concert Dancer

Amanda Tollstam grew up in metropolitan Detroit, where she trained in Cecchetti ballet and Jazz at the Rosemarie Floyd studio in Royal Oak, and was a member of Floyd's contemporary dance company. In high school, she danced at the Center for Creative Studies Arts Institute in Detroit, as well as the Center for Advanced Studies and the Arts (CASA). She attended Interlochen Arts Camp on scholarship, and went on to become a dance major at Western Michigan University. After getting her certification in Massage Therapy in 2004, she moved to Lansing and opened her own business. She danced for LCC's 2005 spring dance concert, and that fall successfully auditioned for Happendance professional company. She also became a member of the outreach performance team, Happendance Education Exchange, and participated in Community Dance Project as a dancer and choreographer. She performed in Velocity Concerts 2006-2010, and it's great to welcome her back for the 2014 event!
